New Year, New Blog

Hello, and Happy New Year. I’m finally getting around to writing something here, so let me start by saying that I’m somewhat out of practice writing a public blog. Forgive me if these early entries are a little on the informal side.

I’m currently in the process of trying to get this site organized into something meaningful. Among the reasons why I’m finally getting around to doing something here is that I’ve pulled back from social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter. I still have accounts with both, but don’t post to either for a number of reasons. In the case of Twitter, I have very little confidence in Elon Musk’s stewardship of the site, but also, I just never particularly liked the nature of either Twitter or Facebook. Both represent the TLDR culture, which is just not me. While I have been told that I can be somewhat long winded (deservedly so), I also believe that there is a certain danger to both the enforced brevity of Twitter, and the superficial nature of Facebook. In both cases, the platforms seem, to me anyway, designed to limit the thought that one puts into what is posted. I consider this dangerous, and believe we’ve seen the results of such activity. I am a thoughtful person, and I feel that the platform with which I express myself should support that.

It is my intention that this blog be professional in nature. Occasionally, I may express opinions on social or even political issues. In the last year or so, I’ve shied away from discussing political issues because of how polarized our society has become. My hope is that what I do decide to say here will be more thought provoking, and less polarizing than what I’ve been known to say on the platforms I’ve mentioned above. That said, my hope is to help support the developer community, from which I have benefitted so much in my career.

Anyway, that’s pretty much it for this first post. I hope that anyone reading is well, and has had a good start to the year.
